Chanchai is an outstanding patent attorney with unique experience in handling intellectual properties from all perspectives as an inventor, an examiner and a consultant. He started his career as a field electrical engineer in a cement manufacturing factory in northeastern Thailand, which gave him on-hand experience in machinery and manufacturing processes. In 1997, he started his new career as a patent examiner in electrical and mechanical engineering group at the Thai Patent Office, where he had worked in all aspects of patent prosecution, such as conducting patentability search, patent opposition and patent examination. There, he also acted as a deputy secretary to the Board of Patent for two years during which he had conducted many appellation cases and some revocation cases. This gave him another direct experience in examination and prosecution. Later in 2002, he switched his role to an in-house patent consultant for Technology Licensing Office of the National Science and Technology Development Agent (NSTDA) – a governmental research institute in Thailand. During his 11 years there, he had extensive opportunities to routinely give consults to many researchers, inventors and private sectors on all technical, legal, and business issues ranging from IP protection strategies to licenses for many forefront technologies, such as solar energy, image technology, embedded system, and AI technology.
Chanchai also has profound academic backgrounds holding a master degree in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University in the United States. For IP education, he has attended, for example, the Advanced Study and Research on Innovation Policy (CASRIP) course at the University of Washington, and Patent Drafting Course – South East Asian (SEAD) arranged by FICPI. In addition, he has been extensively trained on international patent laws and practices from leading Patent offices, including the European Patent Office, the Japanese Patent Office, as well as the Swedish Patent Office.
He joined DS&B as a patent attorney in 2013. With his insight into IPs from the aspects of all relevant stake holders, he can truly understand the inventors’ demands as well as the examiner’s requirements. This allows him to provide practical and effective advice to his clients. His expertise is in fields of patent prosecution and litigation, which includes drafting original patent application, opposition, appeal to the Board of Patent, conducting patentability search, FTO search and patent infringement analysis.
